Projections

You can save your measurements either as euclidian UTM coordinates or as WGS-84. Your selection is made in the Projection tab of the settings dialog. This can also be set in the Shape file settings.

Loosly speaking, UTM is a "flat" coordinate system, defined by cartesian (X, Y, Z) coordinates. A UTM zone must be coupled with the coordinates in order to determine the reference meridian and whether coordinates refer to nortern or southern hemisphere.

WGS-84, on the other hand, is a polar coordinate system, defined by (latitude, longitude, height). WGS-84 is the ellipsoid used by GPS (Global Positioning System). WGS-84 is also the system used for the sensor models of the Ikonos and QuickBird satellites.

Important Note: Only the plane coordinates ( (X, Y) or (latitude, longitude) ) are affected by your selection in this dialog. The height will always be defined in the WGS-84 system.
